"The System Isn't Broken: It was Designed This Way" by Christine E. Sleeter is about the inequalities in the American educational system are the consequence of intentional planning and historical heritage rather than being coincidental. The article talks about the development of education in the United States over time and emphasizes the ways in which practices and policies have traditionally harmed underprivileged groups. For example, segregation, unequal funding, and biased curricula. She talks about how the school system is functioning how it was desgned to rather than saying it doesn't work. She says she wants to change it without directly stating it.
I think this relates to the "Pecious Knowledge" video we watched because it is the constant argument of does our school system work? Some people agree with it and some people want to chnage it. The fact is that every kid is different and learns a different way. That is the most challenging part is to acommidate for every single student so one is not left behind.
Ethnic studies programs play a crucial role in making students feel seen and valued by teaching them about their own culture. It's disappointing that some are trying to shut these programs down, as they have a positive impact on student motivation and learning.
ReplyDeleteYour last sentence is very important when you say that no student should be left behind. That is very important! Teachers main goal should to be to make every student successful! Schools should be creating a positive learning environment for each student.
ReplyDeleteGreat detail and I also believe that no child should be left behind.
